One of the most important steps to take before creating a new eBay and PayPal account is to change your IP Address. Below I’ll explain what an IP address is, how eBay uses it to track you and how you can change your IP address.
What is an IP Address? An IP address (Internet Protocol address) is a unique address that electronic devices use in order to identify and communicate with each other on a computer network. In simpler terms, a computer address.
Your IP address is being tracked!
EBay uses your IP address to track your location and to link you to an account. Every time you log into an eBay account, your IP address is recorded and kept in eBay’s system forever. Let me say that again, every time you log into your eBay or PayPal account, your IP address is logged and kept on file forever! While an IP Address is less of a linking factor today, it can still be used to link your accounts.
Here are a few things that every site on the internet including eBay is able to see about your device:
Tip: To find your own IP address, head over to IPBurger.com. Each time you visit IPBurger it will record your IP address and if detects a different IP address it will keep track of that for you.. it will track up to the last 10 IP addresses.
Sharing the same IP Address with multiple eBay and PayPal accounts can link accounts together; this is especially true when there are similarities with accounts. If accounts have no similarities with each other then it’s harder for eBay to link accounts. A large network where there could be dozens or hundreds of people sharing the same IP address is the reason why an IP Address alone generally is not enough for eBay to link accounts. It typically takes 2-3 similarities (including an IP address) to link an account. With that said it is still VERY important to change your IP address between accounts otherwise you risk your account.
Every time you log into eBay or PayPal, your IP address is tracked and recorded. Not just when you create an account but every time you log in. If you forget to change your IP address one day and you accidentally login to multiple eBay accounts with the same IP address, consider those accounts linked.
Note: You only need to change your IP address once and not every time you login to the same eBay and PayPal account. You only need to change your IP address between different eBay and PayPal accounts to prevent linking.
